Maryann's experience of finding an extended family through AWARE support groups
Share NowFor Maryann, finding support through AWARE NI’s South Belfast mental health support group made a meaningful difference during an incredibly difficult time.
Maryann attends the South Belfast AWARE NI mental health support group as a service user. Following the death of her husband, Maryann experienced the profound loss and isolation that can come with bereavement, particularly when navigating life after the loss of a partner.
Widowing can be an overwhelming experience, bringing not only grief but a sense of disconnection from the world around you. For many people, it can feel difficult to talk openly about how they’re coping, especially when those around them haven’t experienced a similar loss.
She describes AWARE NI as having “always been there” for her, explaining that the group became much more than a place to talk - it became an extended family. By attending regularly, Maryann formed friendships with others who understood what she was going through and who could relate to her experiences in a way that felt safe and genuine.
Being part of the group gave Maryann a space where she could openly share how she was feeling, without fear of judgement. Listening to others with similar lived experiences helped her feel less alone.
Maryann says that by coming along to AWARE NI support groups, people can find the help and comfort they need, as well as the sense of belonging that comes from being part of a supportive, understanding community. For her, that feeling of an extended family - built through shared experience and mutual support - has been an important part of her journey forward.
Maryann encourages who need help and support to reach out.
“It’s only by coming along to an AWARE support group and experiencing what these groups are like, you will find the help and comfort that you need.”
